Euston housing development approved

PLANS for more housing and accommodation in Euston are underway after Balranald Shire Council approved a proposal for a multi-dwelling housing development on Carey Street located off the Sturt Highway.

The building of the units was unanimously approved at a council meeting on October 22.

When the works will start is unknown.

The units will have two parking spots as well as access to on-street parking on Carey Street.

With only one fire exit on the street, Councillor Alison Linnet had initial concerns about safety.

“Say if you were in unit 4 and there was a fire in units 5 and 6, how do you vacate safely?,” she asked.

Director of Infrastructure and Planning Services David McKinley said other buildings on the street are presented with the same exit.

“I guess the same problem presents itself with the neighbouring motel and the other business owners in Carey Street,” he said.

Balranald Shire Council Mayor and Euston resident Louie Zaffina said the town would benefit from more housing to accommodate seasonal and temporary workers in Euston.

“It will be good to have more places that can accommodate people who come to work here, whether they are backpackers or seasonal workers, or people that are working on various projects nearby,” Cr Zaffina told The Guardian.

“This development is definitely something that most of the residents would approve of.

“The main concern is that Euston’s water supplier needs to be improved and upgraded in order to handle a bigger population.”

Cr Zaffina said Euston has the potential for more growth.

There needs to be more housing in Euston and I’m seeing a trend of our families being a little younger and moving here,” he said.

“Many people are moving here because they work in Mildura or Robinvale.

“We have things in common with Mildura and we are kind of a spin-off of them even though we’re not as big of a town.”
