Beyond Compliance: Why the SIL Sector Needs a Participant-First Rethink

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has transformed support delivery in Australia, yet in the realm of Supported Independent Living (SIL), many providers remain tethered to systems that prioritise property and paperwork over people. A new book, Future-Proofing Your SIL Business, is bringing a necessary focus to this tension through the voices of frontline experts.

Rather than offering a single theory, this collective work, compiled by compliance consultant Tania Gomez, brings together a dozen respected professionals including service providers, auditors, and clinicians. Each contributor shares a vision for a sector that moves from being compliance-led to participant-led.

The text is clear that SIL can no longer rely on models where participant matching is an afterthought. Founder of Marco Polo portal, Aaron Cotton, notes that “Getting the right match changes everything.” He argues that poor matching erodes trust and accelerates staff turnover. This sentiment is echoed by Tania Gomez, who asserts that “Compliance is not about passing audits. It’s about protecting people.”

Whether discussing leadership or financial sustainability, the contributors return to the theme that outcomes start with people. Dave Wells, an expert in frontline leadership, emphasizes that “Frontline staff don’t just need training. They need someone to believe in them.”

With more than 730,000 participants in the NDIS, the need for practical guidance is urgent. This book provides operational advice and system-level strategies for those navigating a rising tide of complexity. As contributor Caroline Yates points out, “Complexity isn’t an excuse. It’s a responsibility.”

Ultimately, the book serves as a blueprint for those ready to shift the narrative from box-ticking to genuine impact.
