The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MEN

LAST Sunday saw the grand final of the WRDGA played at Deniliquin, with Murray Downs featured in all three division grand finals.

In Division 1, Deniliquin were victorious over Murray Downs, winning three and two.

Dallas and Ash Free were the two winners for Murray Downs, with Luke Merritt going through to the 20th hole, before losing his match.

In Division 2, Murray Downs overcame Rich River three and two, with Dave Hogan, Jo Watts and Lleyton McLean (after 19 holes) getting the job done for Murray Downs.

In Division 3, the same result was achieved, with Murray Downs coming out on top thanks to the combined efforts of Cayle McLean, John Tripodi and Lucas Free, while the word off the grape vine was that the trip home was enjoyed by all.

On the local scene last Sunday, it was the Betta Home Living medley 4BBB Stableford competition.

Matt Harrop and Jason Perry recorded the best score of 49 points, winning the event comfortably ahead of Andrew Guy and Harry Simpson, who received the runners-up prize from Chris Knee and Tony Miceli, when both pairs finished with 43 points apiece.

Rob Hinton and Rob O’Brien led the ball rundown, ahead of Glenda Coulter and Kristy Gordon, Craig Burrell and Mick Scott with 42 points, and Justin and Ingrid Condely with 41 points.

The nearest the pins were taken out by Lynne Bishop on the second, Marg Moore on the fifth, Grant Ford on the 11th and Brenton Halligan on the 15th.

The elimination finals of the Swan Hill Wholesalers Premier League competition were played last Saturday, when the Royal Goat Trackers get over the Mavericks 97-91.

The best for the Goats were Geoff Frame (34) and George Sidorow (32), while for the undermanned Mavericks, it was Brian White with 33 and Dan Lavey with 30 finishing strongest.

In the match between the second-placed Royal Capri and third-placed Wannabees, it was the all-women team Wannabees coming out on top 108-94.

The best for the victors were Shiela Beard with 38 points, Sue Davis with 36 and Deb Watson with 34, while for the best for Royal Capri were Dale Rogers (30), Geoff Brasser (28) and Roger Walker (26).

This all makes for a very interesting grand final this Saturday between the Royal Goats and Wannabees. If current form is anything to go by, it should be the Wannabees winning the title by a comfortable margin, but the Royal Goats are not previous premiers for no reason and will be a very formidable opposition.

A barbecue and presentations will take place immediately after the rounds are completed, in the Mayers Gazebo.

In the daily Stableford competition, Ross Hastings recorded the day’s best score of 42 points from his handicap of nine, to take out Division 1, ahead of Neville Brady (3) on 37 points.

Leigh Paynter (17) was the best in Division 2 with 38 points, ahead of Chris Grant (17) on 36 points, while in Division 3, the countback system came into play to separate Alistair Ferrier (23) and Rob Smith (23) when both players finished on 37 points, with Ferrier getting the nod in his favour.

The magical mark required to get a ball was 34 points, while Luke Merritt was the closest on both the second and fifth holes, Anthony Carroll was closest on the 11th, as was Seb Linssen on the 15th to take home the nearest the pins.

Last Thursday’s competition was also a Stableford event, played over two divisions from the black tee markers.

The best score of the day was 38 points, which was recorded by both Ken Gregory (10) and Stephen Cameron (20), to be the best in each division.

Similarly, the runner-up in each division also recorded the same score of 37 points, with Laurie Shipsides (14) taking out Division 1 and Neil Bailey (24) Division 2.

Sam Rovere and Mark Warren led the ball rundown with 37 points, which went down 34 points.

The nearest the pins went to Mark Warren, Sam Rovere, Paul Bethune and Sean Baumgurtel on holes two, five, 11 and 15 respectively.

Tuesday’s competition was against par, with Ron Munro (18) getting the chocolates with a score of two up, ahead of Mark Warren (10) at one up.

Malcom Talbot and Murray Conn also finished at one up to lead the ball rundown, while Greg Weybury hit the closest shot on the 11th hole.

MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

PERFECT winter conditions greeted the 43 women who competed in the Stableford event at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club on Wednesday.

Jenny Monahan posted the best score of the day, with 41 points from her 34 handicap, to win Division 2, three points clear of Tracy Hooper (53) who finished as runner-up.

Tracy is a new golfer and travels over from Sea Lake to enjoy the Murray Downs layout.

Lynne Bishop has featured in the prize list for the last two weeks and this week was no exception, with her score of 36 points from her 13 handicap winning Division 1, but only after she survived a countback from Marg Moore (20) and Mag Kiley (19).

Mary Johnson 37 points led the ball pool with Jenny White and Maralyn Morrison also on 36 points, with Jan Butcher and Di Atkin next best with 35 and 34 points respectively, while Kathy Parkinson, Mag Kiley, Di Martin and Marg Moore took out the nearest the pin prizes.
