Swan Hill striker Conner Brown in seventh heaven

A seven-goal haul from Swan Hill striker Conner Brown saw Swan Hill’s men’s soccer team demolish La Trobe University Black 10-0 in Bendigo on Saturday.

It proved to be a day to remember for the Swans, who entered the game with a depleted squad and five youth players filling the bench. They now sit atop of the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League (BASL) division two ladder with a plus five goal difference advantage over Strathfieldsaye Colts United.

With Swan Hill registering just one goal in the first half, the floodgates quickly opened after half time, with Brown going on a spree on his way to scoring seven goals. Captain Cooper Fox put two past the goal keeper, and Jake Cameron also scored for the Swans.

The win sets up a must-win clash against Border Raiders FC this weekend, with the Moama based club one of the competition’s big improvers across the first two rounds of the season.

The men’s side were the only team to bring home points from the weekend in what otherwise proved to be a difficult weekend for the Swan Hill Soccer League. The remaining four BASL sides all suffered losses.

The Swan Hill women’s team were no match for ladder leaders Castlemaine Goldfields FC, with the Swans going down 7-0 at home on Sunday. After trailing by five goals at half time, the Swans were competitive against one of their division’s best teams. Despite failing to register a score, created several strong opportunities in the second half.

The youth boys team also fell to a 7-0 loss, this time at the hands of FC Eaglehawk on the road, while the under 16 boys fell 6-1 to FC Eaglehawk at the Ken Harrison Reserve. Qarin Zulkarnain scored Swan Hill’s only goal for the game.

The final match of the weekend saw the under-16 girls team lose to Castlemaine Gold 4-0 in an ultra-competitive performance.
