Swans score another win

IT was another weekend of mixed results for Swan Hill’s Bendigo Amateur Soccer League teams.

The men’s team walked away as the only victorious team from Saturday’s triple-header in Moama.

Their 4-2 win over Border Raiders FC was their third straight win to start the season as they continue to maintain their grip on top spot of the BASL Division 2 ladder.

Midfielder Gareth Johansen gave Swan Hill the early advantage, netting two first-half goals, before Joel Fataolisia pulled one back for the Raiders before half-time.

The next 30 minutes descended into an arm wrestle, with Swan Hill’s Stephen Whittaker, Jason Stokes and Cooper Fox creating several chances, but unable to deliver the knockout blow to the home side.

That was until the 77th minute, when striker Conner Brown was on the end of a long ball over the Border Raiders’ defence, giving Swan Hill a 3-1 lead.

The home side weren’t finished with, however, with Fataolisia scoring his second goal from the restart, to again bring the margin back to just one goal, before Fox finally iced the game with an 87th minute winner.

The other Swan Hill team to walk away with points from the weekend was the under-16 girls, who had to be content with a 3-3 tie after a controversial finish in their game against Golden City SC.

Swan Hill striker Trinity Shelton scored a hat-trick in the draw, which the Swans were leading until the final minute of the match, when Golden City scored a late equaliser.

The under-16 boys fell at home to Castlemaine Gold 5-4 on Saturday and the youth boys lost 2-1, also to Castlemaine, a day later.

Oliver Miliado scored twice for the under-16s, with Alexander Olandezos and Fakhri Amran also scoring in the loss.

Bailey Johnson backed up after playing for the senior men’s team on Saturday to be the youth boys’ only goalscorer.

Swan Hill’s women’s team proved to be no match for the Border Raiders women’s side, the reigning premiers defeating the Swans 12-0.
