Flyers’ big test

The Swan Hill Flyers will host their second home game of the basketball season this weekend, with both teams to play the Melton Thoroughbreds tomorrow afternoon.

The Lady Flyers will kick off proceedings at 3.00pm, with tip off for Men’s game at 5.00pm.

The Lady Flyers will be searching for their first win of the season, having suffered a 36-point loss to the Kyneton Tigers last weekend. While Swan Hill were more than competitive in the first half, the young and inexperienced Flyers ran out of legs after half time, with Kyneton piling on 41 points to 14 in the second half.

It’s a performance the Flyers will be desperate not to repeat against Melton, who had a winning start to their season after defeating Echuca 64-56 at home last Saturday evening.

With a vastly different and younger squad this season, it will take a few weeks for the Lady Flyers to gel – but with strong performances from their skipper Tess Denham, Carlee Hazlett and Zoe Morris, there are encouraging signs that their first victory may not be all that far away.

While the Men’s team won’t be searching for their first win of the season, they will be locked in an early top of the ladder clash against the Thoroughbreds – who also opened their account last weekend with a 39-point victory over the Echuca Pirates. Melton currently sit atop of the Country Basketball League North West division ladder courtesy of their big win last Saturday, while closely following them is Swan Hill in second – which sets up a mouth-watering contest tomorrow evening.

The Flyers put on a dominant display against Kyneton last Sunday, winning 103-56 and will be hoping for a repeat performance at home. Boom recruit Lachlan Somerville settled quickly into the Flyers line-up, posting 21-points, while new coach Steven Bowden lead the way for his team with a game high 25 points. With a much sterner test facing them tomorrow night, both Somerville and Bowden, along with key players Lachlan Gardner, Sam Bull and Matthew Gardner will all need to be at their very best in order to keep their winning start to the 2022-23 season intact.
