Flyers aiming to return to winners list

The Swan Hill Flyers return to their home court for a clash against Maryborough Blazers in the penultimate round of the North West Country Basketball League competition.

The Lady Flyers will chase their second win of the season against a Blazers outfit that sits directly above them on the ladder.

Last weekend saw a vastly improved performance from Tess Denham’s team, who were competitive for big stretches against two of the league’s top three teams.

Maryborough comes into the clash in red hot form, having defeated the Bendigo Braves (21 points) and winless Macedon Ranges Rockies (31 points) last weekend.

Swan Hill’s men’s team have a weekend double header, travelling to Echuca to take on the Pirates on Saturday night before hosting Maryborough on Sunday.

Both matches appear winnable on paper for the Flyers as both Maryborough (4-4 win-loss) and Echuca (1-6) also sit in the lower half of the CBL ladder.

While the Blazers are still in the playoff race, Swan Hill’s hopes were dashed with last Sunday’s home defeat to Melton.

That match was uncharacteristic for the Flyers, who had been showing solid form in recent weeks, including a 35-point win over Kyneton on the road last Saturday night.

Despite the return of coach Steven Bowden to the line-up, Swan Hill missed the scoring output of Lachlan Somerville last Sunday, and will be hoping he can return to join Lachlan Gardner, Matthew Gardner and Henry Thompson in the starting five.

The Lady Flyers tip off at 12pm on Sunday, with the men’s match to follow from 2pm at the Swan Hill Stadium.
