Alana Woodward joins Saints

SWAN Hill-born AFL Women’s player Alana Woodward has been given a lifeline after she was delisted from Richmond.

The 30-year-old will now don the red, white and black at St Kilda.

A statement by the St Kilda Saints said the 30-year-old has joined their playing list ahead of the upcoming 2022 season.

Woodward played five games for the Tigers in 2020 before a calf injury kept her off the field in 2021.

Head of Women’s Football Jamie Cox said they were rapt to have Woodward join the team for the upcoming season.

“She’s a strong-bodied midfielder who will help deepen our midfield, but her leadership and elite standards will be valuable in lifting our entire playing group,” Mr Cox said.

“Alana is a wonderful person and we can’t wait to see what she’ll bring this coming season.”

This comes after Woodward’s contract was not renewed with the Tigers for 2022.

Woodward was an inaugural member of the Tigers’ AFLW and VFLW squads.

More locally, Woodward has been a mentor for the Woorinen Youth Girls football side, played netball for Swan Hill and football for Kerang’s Women’s Football team.

Swan Hill’s Tessa Lavey and Pooncarie’s Courtney Wakefield will continue with the Tigers next year.
