What could have been?

For the second year in a row, there will be no cheering crowd, no wild celebrations, no tears and commiserations; just silence.

Tomorrow is the second last Saturday in September, which traditionally speaking, is Central Murray Grand Final day.

But once again, the grandstand will be silent, the change rooms empty and there will be vacant netball courts, when there would usually be a heaving crowd.

As disappointing as it may be that season 2021 won’t come to its natural close, we all need to take solace in the fact that normality will return and that one day soon, we will all be back celebrating again.

We, at The Guardian, take this opportunity to say thanks to the countless volunteers that give up their weekends for everyone’s enjoyment.

To the volunteers that man the gates, or the wonderful ladies who run the canteen.

We thank the coaches and trainers, the team managers and the umpires.

The committee men and women who run your clubs and the hundreds of other unsung heroes who give countless hours of their time to perform the countless, thankless tasks that make the lifeblood of our community tick.

To the Central Rivers Board, who tried desperately to get us back to normality, we thank you for your efforts also.

Hopefully, Season 2022 is the year our weekly ritual resumes, uninterrupted; and for those who haven’t done so, please, get vaccinated, so we can once again cheer our team to premiership glory on Grand Final Day.
