Career high goal haul as Angus produces a classic

FORMER AFL star Angus Monfries produced what he believes is a career-high 11-goal haul to lead Lake Boga to a memorable Anzac Day match win over Swan Hill.

The former Essendon and Port Adelaide forward broke open a tight arm wrestle with five consecutive goals in a 12-minute third quarter cameo to help keep his team’s unbeaten record intact.

“I think that is the most goals that I have ever kicked in a game to be honest,” Monfries said after winning the Best on Ground Medal for the feature Anzac Day match on Sunday.

“It was one of those days where the ball was bouncing my way so I will definitely take them when they come.”

Monfries said it was a great occasion in front of a big crowd and hoped the Swan Hill and Lake Boga Anzac matches continue into the future.

“It was a great win and I think it would be great to keep the tradition going on every year between us and Swan Hill,” he said.

“You can build on that rivalry and make it a special game and build up momentum year in year out.”

Swan Hill secretary Carl Hufer was extremely pleased with how the day panned out.

“It was fantastic, we had a really good crowd and great weather,” he said.

“There were great games across the board, we were really happy and we hope it continues into the future.”

Before the start of the senior match, there was an Anzac Day Ceremony that included a live bugler as well as Swan Hill RSL sub-branch President Peter Ritchie reciting the ode of remembrance.

“The ceremony was unreal, there were a few of us watching and we ready to run out and play,” Hufer said.

Hufer said that a lot of work had to be put in by volunteers to make the day a success.

“It was like a mini final for us with the canteen and the bar so we needed everyone hands on deck,” he said.

“It is definitely more than a normal home game, we estimate that it is probably three times a home game at this stage.

“Being on a Sunday is not always that family friendly but we found today that it was a success and look forward to next year if we travel out to Boga.”

“Thanks to the league and thanks to Lake Boga.”
