Nyah-Nyah West United upset Tyntynder

NNW United v Tyntynder

NYAH-NYAH West United came away with a solid 54-43 win over Tyntynder on the weekend.

At their home court, the Demons welcomed back goal shooter Denise Snyder after a week off, who was a huge asset to the attacking end, appearing to slot seamlessly in to the line-up. Snyder was assisted in the ring by Bridie Curran, and together they made it extremely tough for the Dogs’ defence to get any sort of turnovers.

United’s defensive end on Zoe Gray, Matika Mitchell and Shania Decker worked very hard throughout the game to stop Tyntynder’s attack.

The Dogs were without their regular goal attack in Tess Denham for the week due to COVID, with wing defender Demi Wall stepping up to take on the different position. While not as accurate as Denham, she displayed great movement around the ring, and had a great connection with goal shooter Sarah Hawley when feeding into the ring.

Tyntynder young gun Zarlie Featherby also got to take the court for her first A Grade match.

“She did a fantastic job and became more confident as the game went on,” Tyntynder coach Georgia Styles said.

United playing coach Laura Anderson said she was pleased with the result and how her players performed overall, while Tyntynder coach Styles said she was proud of her team despite the loss.

“The girls were disappointed in the loss, but felt like they played a great game and they were not disappointed in the way they played,” Styles said.

“We are a new playing group and they are getting better by the game.”

Next week the Demons will come up against the Cohuna Kangas while the Dogs will take on Woorinen at home. Both matches should see pretty evenly match up sides and be good to watch.

Woorinen v Lake Boga

WOORINEN had a tough day at home against Lake Boga, going down to the Pies 25-40.

This was the first game all season that Woorinen were able to play with their full strength side, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to get them over the line.

Woorinen coach Olivia Jones said that young gun Emily Free was a standout, becoming a “vital part of our defensive end” in creating many stoppages and opportunities to turn the ball over.

New Tigers recruit Emily Siely stepped up in the attacking end to take control of the feeds into the ring.

The Pies’ Hepburn sisters Sarah and Katie handled themselves very well in the goal circle, displaying maturity in what was a very physical contest. At the other end of the court, Pies defence in Jemma Meehan and Felicity Robertson were able to turn over a lot of ball for their team, reading the play well and rebounding strongly.

Koondrook-Barham v Balranald

DESPITE a strong start, Koondrook-Barham had a tough day against the undefeated Balranald Roos, going down 37-61.

The Raiders were joined by Sarah Lay, who despite not have played for a few years, relished her in goal keeper position to take many intercepts and rebound throughout the game against seasoned Roos shooter in Jess Parry.

Mid-courters Tess Doyle and Rach Robinson also worked well, keeping their heads up throughout the game despite the pressure from the Roos.

Raiders A Grade coach Rianna Matuch said her team will be looking to work on their fitness and agility, as well finding a way to get the ball down the court a little bit smoother, trying to stop that hesitation when passing.

Next week Balranald will come up against Swan Hill while Koondrook-Barham will take on Tooleybuc-Manangatang in what should be two good, close matches to watch.

Swan Hill v Cohuna Kangas

IT was a close game between Swan Hill and Cohuna on Saturday, with Swan Hill ending up with the win 38-30.

While the first half of the game was very tight, the Kangas’ performance lapsed a bit in the third quarter, making some silly errors that allowed Swan Hill to get ahead and secure the eight-goal win.

“This was going to be the game that gave us a real indication of how far we have come given the success of Swan Hill over the years,” Kangas coach Danni Sawyer said.

“We came out firing and showed them from the get-go that we were no easy beat.”

Kangas mid-courters Annie Toma and Ellena Findlay worked hard under pressure, while goal keeper Keely Wilson kept her head up against a tough opponent.

Mollie Quinn was consistent in defence for Swan Hill, while Georgia Craig-Neal had the opportunity to play her first A Grade match for the side.
