Rampant second quarter sets up Tyntynder win

Tyntynder tightened their grip on a top five berth with a commanding 54-point win over the winless Nyah Nyah West United on Saturday.

The Doggies ran rampant in the second quarter, piling on eight goals to set up their 13.11 (89) to 5.5 (35) victory.

It turned out to be a day to forget for the Demons as they once again lost their coach Corey Daniels to yet another hamstring strain. Daniels, who was in his first game back from injury, wasn’t the only Demon to go down, however, with young wingman Campbell Everitt injuring his groin and becoming yet another casualty on United’s ever growing injury list.

Save for their lacklustre second quarter, the home side were more than competitive over the remaining 90 minutes – with the Demons getting outscored by just eight points over that time.

Tyntynder’s spread from the contest caused NNW United problems all afternoon, with the home side constantly getting sucked in to the contest and giving the Dogs outside runners in Isaiah Bull and Marcus Wattie free reign to dominate.

While the visitors hurt United on the outside of the contest, the Demons were able to turn the tables on Tyntynder around the stoppages – breaking even in the first half before coming out on top after the main break.

Brock Storer was an ever-present danger in attack for Tyntynder – and despite not hitting the scoreboard, was the one key focal point for his side. Tom Gilbert returned to the team in style, leading the way with four goals – while Kyle Brasser was superb in his midfield-forward role, dominating the Demons in a best on ground performance.

Elia Ware continued to show that he will be a more than handy acquisition for the Dogs across half back, while Trevor Firebrace and Zac Denham were also among the visitor’s better players.

For the Demons, Joel Campbell continued his resurrection as a defender, with the former coach turning in another strong performance down back alongside fellow key back man Adrian Knee, who kept Doggies forward Tate Hulland quiet for the afternoon.

Blake Larkings was a solid contributor in the ruck, while Zack Threadgold, Ethan Saville and improving youngster Oliver Boulton were the pick of NNW United’s midfielders.

Tyntynder faces a huge test next weekend when they host Woorinen – while NNW United will face one of the toughest tasks in the Central Murray when they travel to Cohuna to take on the Kangas.
