WOORINEN celebrated Aaron Cadd’s 350th senior game milestone in style, handing Lake Boga their first loss of the season with a convincing 49-point win.
“It’s an excellent achievement to play 350 senior games and ever since he has come to the club he’s really set the standard for us on and off the field,” Woorinen coach Marcus Demaria said.
The Tigers set up their big win with a dominant first half, handling the windy conditions well to open up a 37-point lead.
Clayton McCartney got the ball rolling with a goal in the opening minute, and despite being wasteful in front of goal, led by 11 points at the first change before piling on five goals to one in the second, as the Tigers took complete control in the midfield. Angus Monfries was the only goalkicker for the Magpies in the second quarter.
“We started the game off pretty well,” Demaria said.
“I reckon at times we didn’t quite take our chances.”
After an arm wrestle in the third quarter, where both teams managed with 2.1 for the term, Lake Boga still faced a six goal margin heading into the final quarter.
But any threat of a comeback was quickly laid to rest, as Nyawi Moore started an early onslaught for the Tigers, kicking the opening of five goals to blow the margin out to over 11 goals.
To the Magpies’ credit, they fought back with late goals to Shannon O’Reilly, Lachlan Burns and Taylor to make the margin a little more respectable.
Mitchell Uhlhorn was fantastic for the Tigers all day in defence. Their back seven gave them plenty of run off half-back and presented plenty of rebound opportunities.
Josh Domaille and Jye Barry were both very good in the midfield all day, and won the midfield battle for Woorinen against a Magpies midfield that had been very good in the first few rounds.
Moore was moved forward and kicked four goals in a dominant second half and Jordy McInnes added four for the Tigers.
Lake Boga, with a 4-1 record, still have a good foundation for the season, and Matt Taverna, Tyle Williams and Taylor were great for the Magpies all day.
Co-coach Monfries said the loss was disappointing but there was still plenty they could take out of the game.
“It is obviously a disappointing result,” he said.
“We came here today with expectations to play some really good footy and probably didn’t play to a level we were after.
“But to fight it out and not get blown off the scoreboard with the amount of fit guys we had was something we can hang our hat on.”
Lake Boga effectively only had one player on the bench for two-and-half quarters as Monfries, Noah Sherlock, Rhys Healey and Lincoln Frost all battled injury niggles throughout the game.
The Tigers didn’t emerge from the game unscathed as McCartney left the ground in the second quarter and Ben Booth took no part in the second half.
