A dominant 12-goal performance from full-forward Jason Eagle helped Tyntynder secure a 90-point victory over Tooleybuc-Manangatang on Saturday – and help tighten their grip on a likely finals berth in the process.
Eagle’s performance was one of strength and power, with the key forward single-handedly outscoring his opposition on his own. Saints coach Dean Helmers and full-back Mitch Ferrie will no doubt be glad that’s the last they will see of Eagle this season, with the Doggies forward following up on his earlier 10-goal effort against them back in Round 2.
Eagle’s effort wasn’t the only strong display up forward for Tyntynder for the afternoon however, with youngster Patrick Blake booting five goals of his own in his senior debut. Making Blake’s performance all the more spectacular was that it was his third game of the day, having already suited up for Tyntynder’s Under 14.5’s and Colts teams.
The strong displays by his forwards certainly pleased Tyntynder coach Josh Stone.
“Apart from a 15-minute period in the third quarter where they kicked four goals, it was a really pleasing result – it was nice to have a strong win like that and one that boosted our percentage,” Stone said.
“The performance from Jason (Eagle) was first class, but so was the effort from the boys in the midfield to get the ball down to him and Patty (Blake) and give them every opportunity to take full advantage.”
Tom Bull and Kyle Brasser were among the Doggies key ball winners on the day, with Bull’s contested style enabling his team to get first use. In the ruck, the points were hard to split between Tyntynder’s Elia Ware and Tooleybuc-Manangatang’s Alex Powell – and although the Saints big man won more of the football, he wasn’t able to hurt the Dogs where it mattered most.
One of the few negatives for the visitors was a corked thigh to key defender Patrick Crowe, although the injury is not expected to keep him out of this Saturday’s match against Koondrook-Barham.
For the home side, Powell was once again their best player on the ground, while Peter Rothacker and Tom Carland both worked hard through the midfield for the Saints, but too often were undone by the sheer weight of class of the opposition. David Kennedy, Harper McNicol and Gareth Grant were also among the home side’s best players, as was defender Elliott Broad for the Dogs.
The win now sees Tyntynder (fourth) sitting two games clear of the Mallee Eagles (sixth) with just six rounds to play, while Tooleybuc-Manangatang will face off against Cohuna Kangas at Cohuna next weekend as they chase their third win of the season.
