Tigers claw hapless Raiders

Brook Shaune-Bould

WOORINEN returned to the winners’ list in style at the weekend, thumping Koondrook-Barham by 141 points.

The Tigers set an aggressive tone right from the start, nailing nine goals in the first quarter to the Raiders’ one to hold a 48-point lead by the first break.

Woorinen coach Marcus Demaria applauded his team’s effort, but said it was important to keep building over the coming weeks.

“We actually played to the wet conditions really well,” Demaria said.

Koondrook-Barham found themselves outplayed by Woorinen’s exceptional forward momentum and strong back line, failing to add another major in the final three quarters.

Despite being obviously outclassed, the home side had more of the ball than the scoreboard might suggest and applied strong pressure throughout the game, particularly through the midfield.

Lachlan Gardner was excellent up forward for the Tigers and kicked six goals, while William Collicoat also made a strong contribution in attack with four goals, and Matthew Gardner and Charlie King each kicked three.

Josh Domaille was the best player for the Tigers, followed closely by Henry Thompson, while Jack Thrum, Ryan Bassett and Josh McMahon put in a strong performances for the Raiders.

The win guarantees Woorinen’s top-three standing on the ladder, despite finishing the home-and-away season with difficult games against Lake Boga and Kerang over the next fortnight.

The Raiders will enjoy a week off with the bye, before finishing their 2023 campaign with an away game against potential finalist Lake Boga.

Despite the heavy loss, Koondrook-Barham coach Will Callow remained upbeat, pleased with his side’s effort and commitment to play out the four quarters.

“On a day when we only scored one goal, to still be running, chasing and laying good tackles all day, that sets a really good example for all the young kids coming through,” Callow said.

“I thought we fought the last quarter out well.”
