Tigers roar into decider
WOORINEN’S women’s football team will be aiming to add a senior title to their two junior trophies when they meet Castlemaine in this Friday’s CVFL Women’s grand final.
The Tigers went through to the decider after coming from behind to beat Eaglehawk by eight points in the preliminary final under lights at the QEO.
After allowing the Hawks to kick the opening two goals of the game and take an 11-point lead into quarter-time, the Tigers were able to level the scores at the main break despite kicking an inaccurate 1.6 in the opening half.
Woorinen’s accuracy improved after half-time, but were only able to increase their lead by two points, before eventually dominating play in the final quarter and running out 4.9 (33) to 4.1 (25) winners.
Neagle goes back-to-back
BALRANALD coach Jydon Neagle has made it back-to-back wins after claiming the Roos’ senior best-and-fairest award on Sunday afternoon.
Neagle, who also won last year’s Jack Betts Medal, outpolled brother Jaxon Neagle to win the award, with hard running midfielder Ethan Gant finishing third, with midfielders Ryan Middlebrook and Matthew Neagle rounding out the top five.
Former Balranald senior coach Ben Mahon claimed the Roos’ reserves best-and-fairest award ahead of David Morgan, while Sebastian Papa was named colts best and fairest, with Cruz Jolliffe finishing runner-up.
Hannah Morton finished off her return season to the Roos by taking out the A Grade netball best-and-fairest award ahead of goal shooter Ella Mirtschin, while Indi Kirby won Balranald’s A Reserve best-and-fairest award from Macy Lloyd.
The Roos’ B Grade best and fairest was Alex Austin, with Abbie Renfrey and Faith Jolliffe sharing the runner-up honours, while Ella Rendall defeated Myah Williams and Molly Helgeland to win the B Reserve award.
Smith hailed Blues’ best
IT’S been a big week for the Kerang Football Netball Club, with the Blues not only re-signing their premiership coach and having finished unbeaten on top of the ladder, but also hosting their best-and-fairest vote count over the weekend.
In a tightly fought affair, Rylee Smith managed to hold on and to win his first senior award with the Blues, just ahead of captain Josh Nitschke, with veteran onballer Marty Kelly and ruckman Nick Lang rounding out the top four placegetters.
Cody Tuohey will go into Saturday’s reserves second semi-final full of confidence after he was named the Blues’ reserves best and fairest, while Bohden McKnight claimed the colts’ award, having played six senior games in his debut year.
Katelyn Wright capped off a stellar season by taking out the Blues’ A Grade netball best-and-fairest award, with the defender polling 42 votes to just beat fellow defender and coach Chloe Adams by one vote.
In the other grades, Lauren Adams claimed the A Reserve best-and-fairest award ahead of Tara Cordina, with Melea Casboult winning the B Grade award in front of Kaylene Adams.
Zenda Ash-Peacock rounded out the senior netball awards by being named the B Reserve best and fairest ahead of runner-up Harley Tarr.
