Zanker creates history

FORMER Natya resident Eden Zanker has been rewarded for a history-breaking AFLW season, winning the league leading-goalkicker award alongside Melbourne teammate Kate Hore.

Zanker, 22, and Hore both kicked 20 goals in the home-and-away season and were the first two AFLW players to reach that mark.

Averaging two goals across 10 matches, Zanker booted a career-best five-goal haul in round 6 against minor premiers Adelaide.

The key forward enjoyed a breakout season, taking her game to another level with her marking and aerial ability.

Zanker and her Demons teammates will attempt to defend their AFLW premiership hosting North Melbourne in this Sunday’s second qualifying final at IKON Park from 3.05pm.

The winner advances to the preliminary final in a fortnight’s time.

Magpies prepare to fly

LAKE Boga have announced three signings – including the return of a favourite son – as they seek to push deeper into finals.

After stints with the VFL’s Northern Bullants and VAFA’s Old Melburnians, Brodie Tonkin will again don the black-and-white stripes next season.

Tonkin played five senior games in his debut season for the Magpies in 2019 and will be a welcome addition to the midfield.

Also joining will be Will Doquille and former Swan Hill junior Lochie Wooding, the pair are expected to add further depth to the onball brigade.

Doquille is an athletic midfielder who played with VAFA club Old Xavier last season and previously played with North Melbourne in the VFL.

Wooding is a midfielder and half-back who has played the past two years at the Eastern Football Netball League’s Whitehorse Pioneers.

He also spent time with the Bendigo Pioneers and Melbourne Grammar School in the APS competition as a junior, before joining VAFA side University Blacks in 2021.
