Tigers relish rematch

AFTER a huge win in round one, Woorinen’s women’s team will be hitting the road again as they take on the team that defeated them in last year’s grand final.

Two new faces were the difference-makers in last week’s victory as youngsters Samantha Johnston and Brydi Lewis combined for 16 of the Tigers’ 20 goals.

But Woorinen will be hoping for another big performance from the pair as they face off against one of the league’s toughest opponents, Castlemaine.

Much like the Tigers, Castlemaine opened their account with a 117-point win over Sandhurst, and Woorinen are well aware of what they’ll come up against.

Woorinen’s coach Katelyn Hazlett said her side knew what Castlemaine were capable of but were all up for the fight.

“With it being a rematch there’s always going to a little bit more nerves and that little bit more meaning behind the game,” Hazlett said.

“Castlemaine have done really well over the offseason and have brought in some really handy recruits as well.

“We’re just hoping we go into the game and have a really good showing to see how we can go.

“It would be amazing to see a big crowd come down and support us in this game.

“We’ve also got a couple of home games that are coming up pretty quickly and we’d love to see a good crowd getting around us and supporting us.”

Hazlett said her side were still looking for more women to take up the sport at the club.

“We’re still happy to have more girls join up and play for us,” she said.

“If girls are having a think about it or are on the fence we’d love for them to come down.

“It’s always great to see some new faces around and to see women giving footy a go even if it’s something that they thought they would not be able to do.

“We have people of all abilities playing so everyone is welcome.”

Woorinen’s under-18 girls’ side will also be on the road to Castlemaine this weekend, with the two sides both searching for their first win of the season.

Both teams opened their seasons with a 69-point loss so Woorinen will be keen to bounce back from their defeat at the hands of Strathfieldsaye.
