Ex-Richmond AFLW star Courtney Wakefield plays for Woorinen

FORMER Richmond AFLW star Courtney Wakefield has donned the black and yellow sash once more over the weekend, this time as part of Woorinen’s women’s football team.

Wakefield hit the road with the Woorinen side, as they travelled to Castlemaine to take on the top side in a rematch of last year’s Central Victoria Football League grand final.

Wakefield was named best-on-field for Woorinen, in her first competitive match for the Tigers after playing with the team in last year’s Pride Weekend celebrations in Hay.

Castlemaine were too good for the Tigers on the day, claiming a big 110-point win, but the opportunity to play alongside an elite athlete was invaluable for Woorinen’s youngsters.

Woorinen coach Katelyn Hazlett said that Wakefield rotated through midfield and forward. She believed the appearance wouldn’t just be a one-off.

“Courtney is obviously a fantastic person,” she said.

“It’s really exciting, especially for our younger girls, to have the opportunity to play with someone that has the football knowledge that she does.

“We’d love for Courtney to be playing a few more games with us, and at this stage that seems like it’s going to be happening.

“Courtney is such a natural leader around the team.

“She has also done some work around the club with our juniors which has been amazing. She’s very community focused and loves that junior development side of things as well.”

Woorinen will be playing their first home game this Sunday, which Hazlett said would be the perfect opportunity for supporters to get around the team as they take on a new team.

“It feels like the crowd grows more and more each week,” she said.

“Hopefully with it being a home game we’ll be able to have a few more people come out and cheer us on.

“It should be a good game this weekend, we are playing one of the newer side’s in Marong, so it should be interesting to see where we are both at.”

The two sides will go head-to-head at Woorinen Recreation Reserve from 1pm on Sunday.
