Woorinen put opponents to sword

WOORINEN’S women’s football team claimed a mammoth victory on the weekend, defeating new CVFL side White Hills by 210-points thanks to a pair of 10-goal hauls.

Taking on the Demons for the first time, Woorinen put their opposition to the sword.

Woorinen’s forwards piled on the goals, Samantha Johnston and Brydi Lewis kicked 10-goals each for the game, negating the loss of last round’s star, Freda Wosomo.

Tenay Fellows added five goals of her own to the total, Jenna Bannam kicked three goals, and coach Katelyn Hazlett rounded out the multiple goal kickers with two.

Madison Allan, Sheridan Gallagher, Maddy Price and Leonie Schulz all hit the scoreboard, with a goal each.

The win moves the Tigers into second place, having won three of their first four games of the season, as they hunt down reigning premiers Castlemaine.

Woorinen’s under-18 youth girls’ team were also in action in Bendigo taking on White Hills on Sunday morning, losing by 66-points.

In a rematch of last year’s youth grand final, vice-captain Sunny Barry kicked three goals for the team, with Erin Johnston kicking two and Grace Ayars one goal.

The trio were named in the best players for the Tigers, alongside Hollie Everett and Fallon Smits.

Both the women and the youth teams will return to Woorinen Recreation Reserve for round five this Sunday when they take on Sandhurst.

The women’s side will be hoping to keep some breathing space between them and the third-placed Dragons, while the under-18’s will be looking to bounce back with their second win of the year.
