Mixed day for Woorinen

WOORINEN’S under 18 girls’ team claimed an upset victory over third-placed Golden Square before the club’s women’s team faced a tough task against the same club.

The youth game was neck-and-neck throughout, with the Tigers leading by a single point at the major break thanks in part to Golden Square’s inaccuracy.

Trailing at three-quarter-time by four points, the youth girls kept their opponents scoreless in the final term, pouncing late to pinch a three-point victory over the Bulldogs.

Sunny Barry, Carly Shepherd and Lanie Somerville were the three goalkickers for the Tigers, with the latter two named in the Tigers’ best players.

Nevaeh Roberts, Milla Stewart, Tyler Arnett and Eva Coffey rounded out the players selected as the best in the win.

It was a much different story for the senior women, who went down by 87 points to the Golden Square team that sits a place above them in second.

The Tigers managed a single goal for the game, with skipper Tenay Fellows being the only goal-kicker and named best on ground for Woorinen.

Ngaire Harlan, Tamara Loveridge, Emilie Ward, Maddy Price and Jenna Bannam were Woorinen’s other best players for the game.

Both teams will return to Woorinen for a Saturday double-header against Eaglehawk this weekend as the women’s side attempt to keep hold of third spot ahead of the Hawks.
