Woorinen climb White Hills for win

WOORINEN’S under 18 girls football team have claimed a huge win over the previously undefeated White Hills side, proving the Tigers are not to be taken lightly.

At home the young Tigers were too good for the travelling White Hills side, who were outclassed by Woorinen who claimed the 72-point win.

It was a full-team effort for the side, going one step better after improvement in the previous meetings against the Demons – losing by 66 points in round six and 34 in round 10.

Woorinen’s coach James Downing said players had taken note of their opponents in the previous meeting, where they started slowly.

“It was a pretty exciting win, we played them four weeks ago and we were stoked to win two quarters,” he said.

“We walked off the field that day having identified that White Hills were a side we had the ability to beat.

“They set themselves that goal to put things in place that given the opportunity to play them again, we could send a statement to the rest of the league.

“We are a young side, but we are in a position where we can challenge the best sides in the competition and make them earn the wins if they want them.

“We can only beat what we come up against, and this weekend we had 23 players available who were ready to go out there.”

The win came off the back of the Tigers team-focused structure, with many girls putting in effort to get the win over the ladder leaders.

Issy Boulton led the scoring for the Tigers with three goals while Grace Ayars and Lauren Clarke finishing the game with two goals each.

Charli Conway, Nevaeh Roberts, Milla Stewart, Lanie Somerville, Mayla Conway and Emilie Ward were named the Tigers’ best players but Downing said it could have been anyone.

“Everyone played their roles so well on Sunday,” he said.

“The structures we’ve put in place and the things we try to plan and work to are working well, and the girls have been really receptive to the challenges we set them.

“The development we’ve seen across the team from number one down to number 23 is huge.

“The girls just continue to improve every week and are slowly realising they have the potential to push the better teams in this league each round.

“It was a day where we were really able to celebrate the success and the growth of our program out here in Woorinen.”

Woorinen’s women’s team also came away from the weekend with a victory over White Hills but it wasn’t the sort of win they would have liked.

White Hills forfeited their senior match, handing over the four points to Woorinen and moving the Tigers into third position without having to take the field.

Both teams will travel to take on Sandhurst next weekend, as the youth girls attempt to leapfrog Golden Square for the ladder’s third position.
