Saints launch season with motivation coach

PERFORMANCE coach Mick Miller spoke to the Tooleybuc Manangatang Football Netball Club at their season launch on March 1.

Club president Taylah Morris said the What Are You Prepared to Do? presentation was good for senior athletes as they continued with their preseason training.

“It was good for the players to hear about the commitment and dedication Mick has to his craft, with his get up and go attitude, and what he’s prepared to do to get the best out of everything he does,” she said.

“He got the players thinking about what more they can do and that there are things that can be improved on at every step in their sporting journey, and whether they’re prepared to take them.

“Our boys and girls have been working hard and putting things together in the preseason, and the practice matches that are coming up will be the icing on the cake.

“We’re hoping to have a much more successful season.”

Mr Miller left his casual job in the marine industry when he decided he wanted to be a strength and conditioning coach and got a job at a gym, working with an instructor to learn the ropes.

His story snowballs from there, to being involved in seven Olympics with rowing and sailing, the America’s Cup, Rugby Union, golf, tennis and NRL.

“I’ve been doing these chats for a while now and I feel that the regional folk connect on a much more authentic level than city folk, because they seem to care and want to understand the people in their teams, workplaces and communities,” Mr Miller said.

“As I said to the footballer and netballers there, it’s not just about becoming a better athlete, it’s about looking after yourself and accepting yourself and becoming a better person in society, whatever you do or whatever your goals are.

“I’ve already heard feedback that players are asking each other ‘what are you prepared to do?’ during training.”

Mr Miller has been doing workshops with agriculture businesses in Tooleybuc for about six years to help leadership understand and implement effective communication for a positive workplace.

Ms Morris said the club appreciated Mr Miller taking the time out of his busy schedule to have a talk with their athletes.

The season launch also included junior football and netball development sessions, scratch matches and season planning.
