Tigers obliterate the Magpies

WOORINEN have made it two 100-plus point wins in a row after they dismantled Lake Boga by 143 points last Saturday.

The 1.2 (8) to 21.25 (151) score keeps the Tigers in first place, one game clear from Cohuna with one more game to be played in the 2025 Central Murray Football Netball League season.

Woorinen got off the mark first, with Jye Barry getting his first goal of the contest, the Tigers finished up with seven goals in the first quarter.

Tim Free, Woorinen’s head coach was happy with the possession during the quarter time huddle, but he also wanted his boys to man up and take away Lake Boga’s hunger.

The Magpies would kick their one and only goal in the second quarter, which was taken by Rex Hickman.

Meanwhile on the other side of the ground, it was Matt Perry who took quite possibly the mark of the season, leaping onto Andrew McDonald’s shoulders and taking an absolute screamer.

He would go on to kick a goal after the siren was sounded for half-time, bumping the Tigers’ lead up to 66 points.

The third quarter would be the same as the first-half, complete dominance from Woorinen, with Jye Barry and William Collicoat leading the charge for the black and yellow.

While over in the midfield, it was Henry Thompson taking care of business, along with winger Tom Langford who returned to the side after missing the clash against Tyntynder.

Woorinen would shut out Lake Boga from their forward line, not allowing a single point to go through the sticks.

The fourth quarter would be a repeat of the third quarter, as the lead would build up to 143 points, and again not a single point was allowed to be scored for the Magpies.

There were a few scraps between the two sides throughout the fourth quarter, which riled up the Lake Boga faithful.

In the end, the Tigers were too good and too strong for the Magpies to keep up, it now gives Woornien the upper hand with one more game to be played.

William Collicoat ended up with six goals, the first time he hit the six goal mark since 2024 when Woorinen faced NNW United in round 12.

Free spoke to The Guardian after the contest, and he was pleased overall with the result.

“I thought we played a really solid four quarter game today,” Free said.

“We moved the footy pretty well for most of the day, apart from shots at goal late in the contest.

“But all in all, I’m pleased with our performance today.”

Free claimed that the connection from the midfield to the forward line was the reason why the Tigers have managed to get two 100-plus point wins in a row.

“Our connection from our midfield to our forward line today was strong, so we had some shots at goal where we had a good chance of converting,” Free said.

“When we are doing that, we are certainly dangerous, we have got multiple options in our forward half that can make us dangerous.”

There was a lot of credit for the back line from Free as well, they were able to intercept the footy and push forward.

“The back six today really intercepted the footy, they ran, carried the footy and connected really well with our midfielders today,” Free said.

“So for us to keep Lake Boga to just one goal is an exceptional effort.”

Vice-captain Taylor Cameron, Ben Booth, and Tom Langford all returned to the first side on the day too, and Free was asked about how he would rate their performances.

“They all had their moments, they were all important at certain moments throughout the day,” Free said.

“Taylor and Ben in the back half probably didn’t have as much work to do compared to Tom who played a part on the wing and in the forward half too.

“However they all returned seamlessly to the side and they all made their contributions for us.”

With one more game to be played for the 2025 season, Woorinen will be playing their final game at Tigerland against Tooleybuc-Manangatang before the finals campaign begin.

Free shared his thoughts for the upcoming contest.

“It’s an important one for us, we know that if we want to stay in first place, we will have to win next week,” Free said.

“We will plan well, make sure we rest and recover then put our minds towards next week.

“We need to be sharp and we need to have quality players that are ready to win the game.”
