MCCALLUM plays Campbell in the Swan Hill tennis pennant tomorrow, with plenty of
tasty tidbits to talk about.
The two teams are battling for fourth place on
the ladder, with only one point separating them, and both have already had the
bye, so they are not unbalanced as teams can be, when one has sat out for the
weekend, and the other has not.
The Wardle siblings go head to head for the
first time, as Darren has stepped up this year to the number one position to
tackle older brother John.
Darren has Max Carroll to back him up, with
Dwayne Grey coming in at number two for Campbell, behind John.
Last week,
both men’s teams performed well, with Campbell just holding off Beveridge to
finish three games up, while McCallum went down to all-conquering Gray by five
games.
Glen McKissack and Trevor Holt could hold the key to the match — when
they dominate for McCallum, the side always does well.
John Brookshaw and
Bernie Mays are in a similar position for Campbell, but their opposition — Tony
Evans and Bruce McDowall — are both tough competitors.
Last week, both teams
fielded three substitutes in the women’s sets — neither side has really settled
down yet, and both are struggling for consistency.
Angela Best is vital to
McCallum’s chances — Karen McKissack did a great job last week, but she can’t be
asked to play two places above her designated ranking all the time.
Jo
O’Bree has yet to make an appearance for Campbell, but it has a handy twosome in
Louise Angus and Bec Grey to take up the slack if necessary.
Newcomers Sarah
O’Meara and Whitney Kennedy should play at the number three slot, but both
missed last week. Hopefully they can make it onto court tomorrow.
Andrea
Mays and Tanya Jolley complete the Campbell official line-up, with Julie Croton
and Virginia Gleeson the final two for McCallum.
Gleeson is in her first
season, and is finding it hard to get used to senior tennis. However she has
plenty of talent, and only needs to persevere, and the better results will come.
Campbell’s mixed combinations got the job done last week, and could be the
difference again tomorrow if the game is still tight late in the
day.
Meanwhile Splatt plays Beveridge in an intriguing match-up.
