Extra funds for adventure play

SWAN Hill Rural City Council has allocated an additional $29,000 to Swan Hill’s new adventure and active play precinct at Riverside Park.

Councillors resolved unanimously to supply the funding towards stage two of the project at last Tuesday’s ordinary council meeting.

Director development and planning Heather Green brought the request to council, seeking approval for the use of funds from council’s resort and recreation reserve budget.

Ms Green said council had been successful in receiving a $1.215 million grant from the federal government under the building better regions fund for the project, which includes a new skate park and adventure and active play zones.

“Due to the nature of these developments, their implementation has been staged into two separate projects, with the following council budget allocation (of) skate park, $388,650, and active adventure play, $1,016,350,” Ms Green said.

“The skate part has just been successfully completed within a set budget and timeframe.”

Ms Green said total cost of the active and adventure play precinct had been estimated at $830,931.

The $29,000 requested was to commence stage two, and would fund a drinking fountain, cooling misters over the sandpit, welcome posts and under story plantings.

Cr Chris Jeffery moved a motion to support the application, seconded by Cr Nicole McKay and carried without opposition.

Cr Jeffery welcomed the project as a positive development of the area.

“This is certainly an exciting development down at Riverside Park and unfortunately some costs can’t be accounted for,” he said.
