Let it grow

GLENVALE Primary School has created a discovery garden of their own, taking out first prize in this year’s Woolworths Let It Grow photo competition.

The competition was established in Swan Hill following Woolworths’ promotional campaign aimed at encouraging young Australians to learn how to garden.

Glenvale Primary School teacher Simone Wren said the school was inspired to grow their own garden after a visit to the supermarket giant.

“This semester, our students have been learning about paddock to plate, learning about where food comes from and how it’s grown,” Ms Wren said.

“We did a visit to Woolworths and went through how food ends up on your plate.

“It was fantastic, they took us through lots of vegetables and it inspired us to come back and start growing our own.”

Grade three to six primary school students have been involved in creating the garden which now incorporates an array of herbs, flowers, fruits and vegetables.

“Radishes, snow peas, lettuces, tomatoes, strawberries, parsley, you name it, we’ve got it,” Ms Wren said.

“The students have worked really, really hard and they’ve learnt so much.”

Ms Wren said the school garden had taken about two terms worth of work, with the hope to keep the garden going for many years ahead.

“The kids really enjoyed making the garden beds and spending time outside,” she said.

“They’ve hammered, they’ve soared, they’ve drilled, painted and they have loved it.

“It’s skills they didn’t know they had, it’s been really self-esteem boosting.

“We thank Woolworths for promoting a different type of learning, the students have really got a lot out of it.”

Woolworths Swan Hill manger Luke Hadfield said he was impressed by the high level of gardening that had come from the competition.

“The Let It Grow campaign was targeted for this exact thing,” Mr Hadfield said.

“It’s sometimes hard for us to see the end results, but we are very proud to see the end product at the local level, it’s just amazing.”

The photo competition was created to highlight fresh home grown gardens in the local area.

All photos had to be garden themed and incorporate use of the Woolworths’ Discovery Garden.
