Icon set to shut up shop

ICONIC discount store Dimmeys has confirmed that its Swan Hill store will close, but the official closing date is unknown.

The news comes after the 166-year-old retailer announced on their Facebook page on November 19 the company would be closing down.

The retailer’s financial controller Madhu Khadka told The Guardian in June a surge of community support for the retailer gave the local store a year-long reprieve.

But, now with the complete shut down of the business, the Swan Hill store will be shutting its doors for the final time.

“Unfortunately, staff will be disappointed once it closes,” Mr Khadka told The Guardian last week.

“And customers will be disappointed because they won’t get the bargains they used to get at Dimmeys.”

Mr Khadka said no date was set for the Swan Hill store to close but “probably in two to three week’s time we’ll know the actual closing (date)”.

He said in the past 12 months, the Swan Hill store, compared to previous years, had run at a loss.

The financial controller cited online competition, new stores and economic factors as the causes for the company’s complete shut down.

“We haven’t been able to change to adapt to the change, so this is probably why we’re in this position,” he said.

Earlier this year, The Guardian reported the Swan Hill store was set to close last February.

Drought and skyrocketing business costs were blamed for the (then) impending closure.

“After 166 years one of Australia’s oldest retailers is Closing Down,” the company’s Facebook post said.
