THE Nyah district Christmas carnival went off with a bang finishing the night with a spectacular display of fireworks.
Students from Nyah District Primary School performed Christmas carols, while Swan Hill band The Drowning Sorrows continued the entertainment into the night.
The annual family-friendly event was held on December 6 at Nyah West Park.
Carnival committee member Vicki Allen said this year was the biggest number of attendees the committee had catered for.
“It was a terrific night, weather wise it was really pleasant and the crowd were well-behaved,” Ms Allen said.
“A lot of people running the children’s rides said they were flat out and some stalls ran out of food.
“We had a lot of support from local community groups, like Nyah District Lions Club, the Nykora CWA, Nyah District Primary School and Nyah District Action Group.”
The committee is a sub-branch of the Nyah District Action Group.
Swan Hill Rural City Council Murray-Mallee Ward councillor Nicole McKay said the festival was a credit to the district and local organisations.
“It was an outright success, a great community and Christmas spirit,” Ms McKay said.
“I think it was a real sign of just how people love their area and how they enjoy their community.”
Cr McKay said the carnival provided something for everybody, but said her highlight was the camel rides.
She also praised the food and the performance by The Drowning Sorrows.
“There was great fun watching the band, the camels never stopped and the train going around the town was full,” she said.
“Lots of people came from outside the area which was nice to see.”
“It was beautiful to see Nyah West lit up by fireworks behind the streetscape.”
