FIRE investigators are working to determine the cause of a grassfire that caused headaches for CFA volunteers on Friday night.
The fire was reported shortly after 11pm on Werril Street, Swan Hill.
“It was difficult country to access because it was old irrigation properties,” Swan Hill Fire Brigade captain Dennis Turner said.
It took more than 10 crews, three support appliances and 50 volunteers two hours to bring the fire under control.
The fire burnt 10 acres, destroying mostly fencing.
“It was complex for us, if there wasn’t a fence in the way, we had to deal with water channels,” cpt Turner said.
“There were some strong winds on Friday night, so the fire did move pretty quickly.
“In that area, there is a lot of dry fuel loading.”
One crew remained on the fire ground on Saturday.
Meanwhile, an hour later another fire was reported nearby, however investigations on Saturday determined that fire was linked, started by an ember attack.
The fire came as fire authorities braced for a total fire ban on Friday.
