CABIN INFERNO

A STOVE left on has caused a fire which destroyed two cabins and a vehicle at BIG4 Swan Hill on Christmas Eve.

The fire broke out shortly after 1pm on December 24, and was contained in about half-an-hour by 35 volunteer firefighters.

The occupants weren’t in the cabin at the time and no-one was injured.

Swan Hill Fire Brigade captain Dennis Turner said a stove was left on in the unit causing the fire to spark.

“It completely destroyed two units and severely damaged a third and the vehicle next to it was totally destroyed as well,” capt Turner said.

The vehicle belonged to the occupant of the cabin.

“We had three crews from Swan Hill, as well as Lake Boga, Beverford, and Woorinen South (on the scene),” capt Turner said.

“The crews did a good job in getting it contained.”

Capt Turner said the fire “turned very quickly” because of the construction and materials (wood) of the cabin.

He said the two units were fully engulfed by the time fire crews arrived on the scene.

Police determined the fire non-suspicious.

BIG4 Swan Hill owner Linley Morgan said all caravan park occupants were evacuated during the incident for safety reasons.

She said electricity and gas to all cabins were turned off after the fire sparked.
