Welcome boost to services

WHILE there’s a push for a new kindergarten in Wycheproof, supporters for the new facility welcomed news a kindergarten will open in Swan Hill in 2021.

Wycheproof Preschool Advisory Group (WPAG) president Tessa Coles said it was fantastic news for Swan Hill.

“I know when I previously lived up there childcare and kindergartens were a massive issue,” Ms Coles said.

“I don’t think Wycheproof is a unique circumstance with our issues going on, but I do think we’re being left in the dark with funding.

“I think there’s definitely a need for more (kindergartens) because there’s many others there (in Swan Hill) in our situation.”

The Wycheproof Preschool Centre has been plagued with staffing issues and session cancellations in recent months.

The preschool was also recently rejected following a bid for government funding for a new facility.

Wycheproof P-12 College principal Christine McKersie also threw her support behind the cause, but said they would like to see a new facility built in Wycheproof.

“It would give all young children in our community a fabulous start to the world of education,” she said.

Earlier this year Ms McKersie deemed the facility in Wycheproof not fit for its purpose.

The school has also jumped on the bandwagon for a new kindergarten in Wycheproof with their Rural Kids Matter campaign.

The campaign aimed to close the divide between regional and metropolitan schools.

Meanwhile, Lake Boga Primary School principal Joe Summerhayes said the opening of the new facility was fantastic for children in the whole area.

“It’s great to have the opportunity to learn and grow in a new facility,” he said.

“Our vision in Lake Boga was to integrate children from birth right up, so to see that happening, I think it’s great for the Swan Hill community as well.”

Lake Boga Preschool’s facility was recently upgraded to now include maternal health.
