Convoy of relief

A CONVOY of hay trucks and vehicles loaded with goods left Swan Hill to bushfire-ravaged communities in Tallangatta last Friday.

Cummins mechanical technician and convoy organiser Jack Hulands said the aim of the charity run was to assist those in need.

“Everyone here in Swan Hill has got a house to go home to with their family and where they’re safe, but these guys have absolutely nothing, so it’s the least we can do really,” Mr Hulands told The Guardian.

After putting the word out on social media last week, Mr Hulands’ request for help resulted in an instant response from the Swan Hill community.

“After making my first call, I had one full semi-load of hay donated and realised straight away it was going to be a bit more a job than I first thought,” he said.

“Now it’s got to three semis and two B-doubles all loaded with hay and about 10 fully loaded utes and cars that will make the trip.”

Mr Hulands teamed up with about half the businesses around Swan Hill to make the charity run possible.

“The community outpour has been absolutely grouse,” he said.

“Within the space of a day, my shed completely half-full with donations from slabs of water to baby formula, clothes, bedding and generators.

“The team at Swan Hill Hire have been a big help and donated a couple of generators themselves and the use of a trailer and ute to pull up there.”

The convoy departed Swan Hill on Friday afternoon before arriving in Tallangatta, 400km from Swan Hill, early Saturday morning.
