Tennis clinic huge hit

Swan Hill Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’s new head tennis coach Michael Mullen conducted his first clinic at the club on Wednesday, with more than 40 children participating.

The former Australian Special Olympic Team head coach had three sessions throughout the day for beginners (6-8 years old), intermediates (8-12) and elite (12 and over).

Across each two-hour session, Mullen set out a wealth of fun drills, activities and games to assess the level of their skills.

With more than 25 years of experience as a tennis coach across Australia, Mullen said it was pleasing to see a lot of participants keen to learn.

“We had good numbers, which is great considering the temperature exceeding 30 degrees,” Mullen said.

“This initial clinic gives them a chance to have a bit of fun while I get an idea of the techniques of the players in Swan Hill and what I can work on with them such as their swing or footwork.

“It’s great to see how keen they all are and that’s number one priority for a coach because it makes it easier to build a rapport and take in my messages.

“Anyone can play tennis, but even the smallest of changes can improve one’s game by up to 20 per cent in no time.”

Mullen has one more clinic scheduled for Wednesday with beginners at 9am, intermediates at 11am and elites at 1pm.
