Fresh start with school packs

MALLEE District Aboriginal Services (MDAS) has spent the past few days putting together back-to-school packs for the region’s indigenous secondary students.

Youth and family services project officer Sharni Karpany spearheaded the project, which aims to keep disadvantaged youth engaged and in school.

“We are looking out for these kids and we want the best possible future for them — and that starts with education,” she said.

The packs contain basic stationery supplies, including exercise books, pens, pencils, highlighters and erasers.

Any Aboriginal student who needs study supplies can collect a pack from the MDAS office in Tenth Street, Mildura.

“We basically made these packs just to assist those kids who can’t afford to get all the necessary stuff for school, or those who have left it until the last minute,” Ms Karpany said.
