Mildura man tests positive to COVID-19

A man who presented at Mildura Base Public Hospital (MBPH) on Saturday night has tested positive to COVID-19.

MBPH was trying to contact the relevant health authorities to confirm the evolving situation.

A MBPH source told Sunraysia Daily the hospital would provide updates when more information was available.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews addressed the situation in Mildura at his Sunday press conference.

Victoria’s COVID-19 response commander Jeroen Weimar told the press conference the man, in his 30s, had attended an AFL match at the MCG. It is understood he travelled with a household group of three.

The man is still at MBPH being interviewed to determine exposure sites and close contacts, after he returned a positive test in the early hours of the morning.

Victoria reported 16 new coronavirus cases, bringing its total to 59. There were 217 listed exposure sites and more than 53,000 tests were carried out on Saturday.

Although yet to confirm details, sources said the man may have been active in the community over the past few days.

In the meantime, Sunraysia Community Health Services has opened its walk-up testing clinic from 10.30am today.

The case in Mildura, confirmed late Sunday morning, comes in addition to the 16 new cases Victoria already recorded on Sunday, bringing the total of the latest outbreak to 59. There were 217 listed exposure sites and more than 53,000 tests were carried out on Saturday.

Exposure sites in Sunraysia are yet to be confirmed.

Mr Andrews said it was a reminder that regional areas were not immune to COVID-19.

“It’s about as far away from Melbourne as you can get,” he said.

“A problem anywhere can be a problem everywhere.”

More to come.
