Tooleybuc Post Office changes guard

For more than 15 years the mail for Tooleybuc has been handled by Glenys Connolly.

But from March the parcels and letters will be in the hands of new owners as she calls time on a long working career.

Ms Connolly wasn’t always a local, having spent nearly half a century raising a family and working in Bendigo.

Communication has been an important part of her work life, spending more than 40 years working for the telephone exchange in the goldfields town.

At the tender age of 63 she felt that she was too young to retire so looked at other possibilities.

Her daughter, a Swan Hill resident, saw the opportunity to run the Tooleybuc Post Office and thought it would be ideal for her mother.

Ms Connolly said that she spent four or five years working hard to build up the business.

“I could write a diary or a book on the town, but I won’t,” she quips.

“I have enjoyed many things here as well.

“During the lockdowns it was lovely having the police and army here, it was great company and they were nice fellas.

“It’s also great with all the people coming down the river on boats, they call in for a chat.

“I’ve enjoyed it here, I’ve loved it here looking out on the Murray every day of the week.”

Over the last 15 years there have been many changes in the town and the post office.

The most significant have been in the way the postal system has gone towards a more digitised system.

Ms Connelly said she was finding it more difficult to keep up with the changes.

“I found it really hard to have to go into the computer all the time and keep doing online training all the time,” she said.

“It really just needs some younger blood in here.

“I’m now looking forward to going out for brunches, teas and coffees now.

“Going to musicals in town again.”
