Joanne’s discovering a great job

Patrick Tucker

TOOLEYBUC resident Joanne Stevenson has achieved her employment goals through her participation in the Echuca Discoveries Work Skills Program and the Tooleybuc Op Shop.

Ms Stevenson obtained a job at Linen House in Swan Hill five months ago using the skills and experience she developed through the program.

“Work Skills helped me develop valuable skills like resume writing and customer service, which gave me the confidence to pursue work,” Ms Stevenson said.

“Finding out I’d gotten the job was one of the happiest moments of my life. It’s been an incredible experience, and I’m so proud of what I’ve accomplished, I haven’t looked back since.”

Now working six hours per week, she handles tasks like ironing sheets, making beds, stocking shelves and assisting customers.

Linen House store manager Kylie Ball values the qualities Ms Stevenson brings to the team.

“She’s always happy and her positive attitude can be great,” she said.

“It really lifts me up, she’s a great asset to the team.”

Echuca Discoveries director Joanne O’Bree has watched Ms Stevenson’s successes since she joined the program.

“JoJo’s success has shown with the right support, people with disabilities can thrive in the workforce,” she said.

“Having their presence in the community showcases their abilities and the skills they’re learning.”

For Ms Stevenson, the job is more than just a pay cheque; it’s a source of pride and self-worth.

“It’s the longest I’ve ever stayed in a job, and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been,” she said.

Ms Stevenson is focused on saving for a car, continuing to strengthen her independence and achieving her goals, all made possible with her gainful employment.
