Sea Lake’s making waves

SEA Lake is a small town that’s leaving a big impression.

Fast becoming a unique tourism destination, the town is home to Lake Tyrrell, a unique salt lake which spans more than 20,000 hectares.

The shallow, salt crusted depression is the largest salt lake in Victoria.

The lake’s natural beauty, night sky and reflective water have become a major drawcard for local and international tourists.

It has been dubbed the “sky mirror”, and it’s these reflective images and optical illusions of walking on water which have wowed audiences across the world.

Newly installed tourism infrastructure at Lake Tyrrell includes a boardwalk, interpretive signage, sky lounge, viewing platform and walking tracks.

While in town, be sure to check out SkyMirror gallery and cafe, showcasing the works of award-winning photographers who have captured breath-taking images of Lake Tyrrell and the night sky.

Within Sea Lake itself, the main street has undergone a refurbishment as part of a streetscape beautification project.

It provides a perfect rest stop for travellers on the Calder Highway, with the town situated almost halfway between Bendigo and Mildura.

Sea Lake boasts lovely artworks and murals and is part of the silo art tour.

The town is well serviced and has a supermarket, post office, hardware store, chemist, hairdresser, gift shop, beauty salon and electric vehicle charging station.

There’s also an op shop, with funds raised assisting the local hospital, and a shared shop featuring 12 traders under the one roof, selling a range of products including jams, honey, jewellery, home and garden décor, books and body care products.

The town’s information centre, on the Calder Highway, is a central hub for tourists visiting the area and features local produce and an Indigenous art display.

For something a little different, Kaktus Kazza Nursery is home to a unique cactus garden, featuring an extraordinary assortment of cacti, succulents and cottage plants.

The quarter acre block is home to more than 100 varieties of cacti and succulents, with the majority of the garden grown from cuttings.

Bursting with vibrant shades of different colours, the urban oasis is neatly tucked behind the fence of the Hannon Street property.

Rocky garden paths meander throughout the garden, and as soon as you enter you are naturally drawn to the uniqueness of the landscape.

The different cacti varieties combine to create a colourful display of varying textures, shapes and shades of colour.

If you’re looking for a new holiday read on your travels or appreciate the history of architecture, be sure to explore the Advance Sea Lake Inc Book Exchange.

The book exchange features a huge collection, spanning many genres, with proceeds benefiting the community via the Book Exchange Community Chest.

The town’s Royal Hotel is also an architectural delight, restored to its former glory by dedicated community members who have invested in the community-owned facility.

The Mallee is a rich agricultural region, with Sea Lake predominantly a broadacre cropping area, growing a range of crops including wheat, barley, peas, legumes, vetch and canola.

Visitors may be lucky enough to enjoy the colourful landscape of canola paddocks in full bloom throughout August and September.

Th crops are sown between April and May and harvested in November and December.

Sea Lake is also home to Green Lake, a recreational lake with camping facilities, offering both powered and unpowered sites, within this beautiful nature reserve, renowned for its bird life.

The lake is a popular spot for residents who enjoy swimming, skiing and boating activities.

The picturesque lake provides the perfect backdrop for spectacular Mallee sunsets.

The grounds feature a playground, picnic areas, barbecues and bush walking tracks.
