Tuesday, September 3

Farmers made their way to Bendigo to voice concerns over mining proposals on farmland. 

Mine Free Mallee Farms and Mine Free Wimmera Farms were represented at the demonstration which took place outside the Rural Press Club of Victoria luncheon, which was attended by Premier Jacinta Allen.

MFMF spokesperson Craige Kennedy said there was general concern around the proposed mines, and other renewable energy projects. 

Speakers at the rally talked about how lives had been impacted by the devaluation of property, while questioning the future of agriculture and regional communities in the state.

Swan Hill Racecourse Bowls Club raised $2567 at the Racecourse Cancer Morning Tea, with proceeds to go towards the purchase of an MRI machine in Swan Hill.


Friday, September 6

Award winning director and former Guardian journalist, Janine Hosking, premiered her new film A Horse Named Winx at Showbiz Cinemas. 

The event, which took place over two days was a fundraiser for Inner Wheel Swan Hill, with proceeds to be donated towards the town’s MRI fundraising target of $3.2 million. 

The event was a huge success, raising more than $7500.

There was new hope for the future of the Swan Hill Drag Racing Track after a consortium applied for a user group agreement with Swan Hill Rural City Council.

Residents of Swan Hill recycled more than six million containers following the introduction of the Victorian Government’s container deposit scheme, which started on November 1, 2023.

Nominations for the Swan Hill Rural City Council election opened with motivated individuals urged to consider standing for council.


Tuesday, September 10

Concept designs for Riverside Park were unveiled. 

Council said the initiative was “set to transform the riverfront precinct into a vibrant, inclusive destination and provide an attractive, improved and accessible way for the community and visitors to interact with the water.” Plans include the replacement of the 10 steps, retaining wall works to prevent further riverbank erosion and the addition of a mooring platform.

Ultima defeated Hay by one point in a thrilling Golden Rivers footy grand final. 

The win marked the Roos’ first premiership since 2015, and 13th senior flag in the team’s history, with the final score 11.10 (76) to 11.9 (75).


Friday, September 13

Swan Hill contractor Nathan Condely received a prestigious award for his company’s work on the Marraboor River Viewing Platform and Boardwalk.

The future of the Swan Hill drag strip remained in limbo after council voted down a motion in favour of the Skid City consortium, which had applied for a user group agreement with Swan Hill Rural City Council. 

At a packed meeting, which saw more than 50 people in attendance, some councillors voiced concerns that due diligence had not been satisfied and an expression-of-interest process should begin. 

Swan Hill Drag Club president Gary Rovere said he was “devastated” by the news and it was a huge blow for the club.

Investigations into two burglaries in Lake Boga and Nyah West continued as Swan Hill police searched for three firearms stolen from a property.

Farmers across the region were in desperate need of more rain to improve yields ahead of harvest. 

Farmers were looking at a very good crop in May, following above-average rainfall but things quickly began to go backwards with a very dry winter, and frost damage.


Tuesday, September 17

Three Central Murray footballers couldn’t be separated in the Jack Betts Medal vote count. 

Mallee Eagles’ Harry Allen, Tooleybuc-Manangatang’s Connor McDonald and Cohuna’s Joel Helman secured 24 votes each, to claim the league’s highest honour.

Plans for Swan Hill’s drag strip progressed after council agreed to consider a lease-agreement with the Skid City consortium. 

The decision meant consortium members could start negotiations with SHRCC to outline the terms of the lease and start preparing for works to take place at the site.

Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers claimed back-to-back premierships for the first time since joining the North Central Football League, defeating Birchip-Watchem by 13 points.


Friday, September 20

A man died following a house fire in Domaille Crescent. 

Another man was taken into custody following the fire, with police treating it as suspicious. 

More than 25 firefighters attended the fire, which broke out around 5.40pm on Thursday, September 19.

Nominees for the 20024 local government council elections were finalised, with 15 nominees throwing their hat into the ring for the seven available positions.

Footy fever hit town, ahead of the 20024 Central Murray Football Netball League grand final. 

Kerang prepared to take on Nyah-Nyah West United. 

The Demons were hoping to win their first premiership since 2001, while Kerang was hoping to send coach Troy Coates off as a winner in his final game.


Tuesday, September 24

A Swan Hill man was charged with the murder of his brother after a fatal house fire in Domaille Cresent.

Nyah Nyah West United celebrated victory over Kerang on Saturday after winning the CMFNL premiership cup. 

The 54 point win over Kerang ended a 23-year premiership drought for the Demons.


Friday, September 27

Swan Hill Council gave the green light for a service station to be developed at the southern entrance to Swan Hill after the applicant’s amendments were approved by objectors.

The new Swan Hill emergency department was on track for completion. 

Victorian Minister for Health Infrastructure Mary-Anne Thomas visited Swan Hill where she was given a tour of the redevelopment. 

“This emergency department is a complete game-changer for the people of Swan Hill and the broader region, so I’m delighted to be here.” she said.

The Swan Hill Genealogical and Historical Society Inc celebrated its 40th birthday.

Land-access agreements were in place for more than 100 properties in the VNI West draft corridor to allow survey work to continue. 

The announcement of the preferred easement that will host the VNI West transmission line was expected to be announced in the near future, with construction of the project scheduled for 2026.

The Murray Valley Country Women’s Association donated $5000 to the hospital’s Mallee MRI Appeal.
