District swimming championships held

THE Loddon Mallee District Swimming Championships — the final carnival of the season — was held at the Swan Hill pool on Saturday.

In order to be able to compete on the day all swimmers must have swam in four other local district carnivals throughout the season.

There was a reduced field of about 50 swimmers but with medals up for grabs and records to be broken the competition was fierce.

A couple of the individual longstanding records broken on the day were: Melissa Sambrooks 100m breaststroke (the record being held since 1985), while Kyra Bennet broke the 2003, 50m backstroke record.

The end of the day saw the local district committee present individual honours to the new age champions — those being:

Girls: 8 and under Emily Kearns; 9 and 10 years Alivia Andrews; 11 and 12 Years Evelyn Crawford; 13 and 14 years Olivia King; 15 and 16 years Melissa Sambrooks; 17 to 34 years Kyra Bennett; 35 plus Rose Bruton; open Melissa Sambrooks.

Boys: 8 and under Brad Dunstone; 9 and 10 years Edward Robinson; 11 and 12 years Sam McGowan; 13 and 14 years Matthew King; 15 and 16 years Ryan Hodgson; 35 years and over Kendal Atkinson; open Rory Grogan.

Swan Hill Nyah Two Bays won the perpetual Scriven Trophy for the district again — which head coach Shirley Swan was most pleased with.

Meanwhile, NTBSH held its annual All-Schools Swimming Championships last month.

There were more than 150 entries from schools around the district, and good results were achieved right across all age groups and lots of fun had.

The overall winner for the night was the Boort school who also won the handicap shield, this annual event is proving to be a popular one with many planning a return visit for next year.
