A hidden gem

A GEM is tucked away behind the footy ground at Lake Boga — with sweeping fairways and undulating hills, Lakeside Golf Club’s course packs a spectacular punch.

And with plenty of rain to start the season, locals say the course is in the best condition it’s been in for years.

“It hasn’t looked this good for 20 odd years. The early rain has really helped,” club president David Williams said.

The club will celebrate its 90th year in a couple of weeks and, with some new members looking likely thanks to the support of Golf Victoria and the Golf Give It A Go program, things are looking up lately for the small club.

Enthusiastic conversation and laughter can usually be heard from the clubhouse after a round — and for up to three hours afterwards isn’t uncommon, according to Williams.

He said the club’s dedicated volunteers faced issues similar to many small sporting clubs across the district — weather, dwindling numbers and damaged caused by wildlife among the main concerns.

“But in spite of those issues the club is still going strong and has a good network of people,” he said.

“It’s not just a golf course — it’s a club.”
