Smith aims to go out on top

THIS month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow could be the beginning of the end for Ross Smith’s international badminton career.

Smith was confirmed as part of Australia’s team to head to the Scottish capital for Games from July 23 when Badminton Australia announced the team this week.

Speaking to The Guardian yesterday, Smith said the event, his third Commonwealth Games, would likely see him start to farewell the circuit.

“I’m starting to come towards the end of it, I’ll be 30 next year and I’ve been doing it for the last decade,” he said.

“So I’m starting to wind it down a bit, but the Commonwealth Games will be a really big push. Then another month or so after that will be the World Championships.”

Smith teamed up with Rob Middleton following the Olympic Games in London in 2012, following a long association with Glen Warfe.

Smith said the new partnership had so far been successful.

“We’ve been together since after the Olympics, basically the last 18 months,” he said.
