SWAN Hill RSL Sub-Branch officials are satisfied with how medals are worn locally at Anzac Day, despite concerns raised by national RSL representatives that people are wearing them inappropriately.
War veterans around the country have been raising concerns that some marchers were wearing state-issued medals on their left breast, where defence medals were meant to be displayed.
On Tuesday, RSL National President Ken Doolan made headlines after saying state and federal governments should review guidelines concerning which medals could be legitimately worn on the left hand side.
However, Swan Hill RSL Sub-Branch Secretary Dr Noel King said that, though there was “a whole heap of confusion” surrounding the issue, there were no such concerns expressed at Swan Hill ceremonies.
“As a general rule, if it’s an award given by the Governor General or the Queen it can be worn on the left,” Dr King said.
“I certainly know in other places people have worn things inappropriately on the left, but we haven’t had any problem here.”
