IT IS still two years before the Swan Hill Modernisation Project is expected to be completed, with some works expected to take place in winter this year.
Under the project, the number nine channel that passes through the Swan Hill township and supplies water to Woorinen will be decommissioned.
The Swan Hill irrigation region is primarily supplied by two separate channel systems, with water coming from both the Murray River and Little Murray River.
According to Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW), since the late 1800s more than 6500km of channels have been built within the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District.
However, with changes in land use and supply systems, the channel delivers more water than demand calls for.
