Escapees keep authorities on their toes

SWAN Hill was alive with the sound of hooves this week, when a couple of livestock escapees took to roaming the streets rather than the paddock.

On Wednesday, a cow could be seen moo-ving around town about 5.30pm after it jumped from a trailer at the Swan Hill Saleyards.

It was reportedly last seen strolling McCallum Street making a beeline for the stock-route to New South Wales.

Following a call to Swan Hill Rural City Council’s on-call ranger, an hour-long search could not make hide nor hair of the elusive creature and the search was abandoned.

Meanwhile, earlier in the week a sheep was also witnessed trotting about town.

On Monday, the ewe escaped from a paddock near the Big 4 Caravan Park on Nyah Road about 10am.

“Council’s on call Ranger attended the call out and every attempt was made to capture the ewe,” a SHRCC spokesperson said.

“Unfortunately the ewe could not be secured and with the owner’s permission, the ewe was euthanized.”
