Mallyon smacks down the Topaz

LOCAL connections celebrated after the main race on Friday, with Smackdown leading the field home in the Pooles Accountants Golden Topaz.

The six-year-old gelding was steered home by Jordan Mallyon, beating a 14-horse field for Mornington-based trainer Trent Pennuto.

Smackdown drew barrier one but was not highly rated pre-race, with markets having him as long as a $26 outsider.

In the day’s other main attraction, Dale Smith got the job done aboard Mick Price’s Prince Of Brooklyn.

The two-year-old was first home in the Betfair VOBIS Gold Elvstroem Classic, beating a strong but small field of nine.

In Friday’s other races, Pennuto took out Race 1 with Leti Sine, with Golden Oldies giving Terry and Karina O’Sullivan a golden reason to celebrate following Race 3.

Race 2 proved a happy hunting ground for former Berriwillock local Darren Weir, with Dean Yendall successfully navigating the 1200m course aboard Vertical Hold.

Symon Wilde’s Dodging Bullets dodged the competition to claim victory with Michelle Payne aboard in Race 5.

Jarrod McLean’s Muchos Respectos was the most respected horse of Race 7, with Kyle Maskiell steering the gelding to a win in the 12-horse field.

Trainer Rod Symons and jockey Dylan Dunn celebrated a win in the last race on Friday, with Kings Palace saluting in the 11-horse field.
