Eagles continue to fly high

A HOME court upset saw Tyntynder go down by eight goals on Saturday, with the Mallee Eagles now sitting pretty at number five, directly swapping ladder positions with the Dogs.

“We expected a tough game, a close game,” Eagles coach Nonie Domaille said yesterday.

“It was pretty even at the start.”

Young gun and Dogs’ best on ground Zoe Spence-Benfield proved highly dangerous in goal shooter with 40 goals, and Eagles defence had to work hard to counteract Spence-Benfield’s height advantage. 

“My girls were pretty much playing on her to try and put her out of the game,” Domaille said. 

Down the other end of the court Eagles best on ground Emelia Bett netted 31 goals to Kyra Bennett’s 26. 

“[Emelia] played really well yesterday, strong in shooting and rebounding,” Domaille said.

“All over the attack she was dominant.”

Domaille said her team played well across the court.

“Passing through the centre was really good, and our goalies were very accurate, and strong in their rebounds.” 

“I was really really proud of all of them. 

“If we missed we got our rebounds and made sure of our goals. 

“Any turnovers we tried to pick up on and make sure we got a goal.”

Tyntynder meet Cohuna next weekend in a Round 13 showdown that will boost the Dogs finals hopes if they secure a similar decisive victory as the last time the two sides met. 

The Eagles will face off against tenth-placed Koondrook Barham, but even after four straight wins, Domaille is playing her cards close to her chest. 

“Koondrook Barham is always tough,” she said,

“Every team is strong, you can never doubt anyone.”

But to outsiders, it doesn’t seem likely the high flying Eagles will have their winning streak ended in the near future.

“We’ve started to get it together and we’re only improving week by week,” said Domaille.

“It seems to be working.”
