Councils unite to improve rural liveability

SWAN Hill Rural City Council has resolved to support a campaign aimed at improving the liveability of small communities.

With some small rural shires failing to provide basic services, the Rural Living campaign was created by Buloke Shire Council in an effort to highlight the importance of maintaining at least minimum services in small areas to ensure “liveability and safety standards”.

It is hoped to be part of the answer to the increasing problems associated with a population decline in some rural Victorian areas, and the difficulty of maintaining services.

“All Victorians are entitled to a base level of services,” Buloke Shire Mayor Reid Mather said.

Last week, SHRCC formally endorsed the campaign in a unanimous show of support.

A total of $1000 was committed to the campaign, which seeks to unite councils to lobby State Government to enable them to maintain a minimum service level.
