Fruit fly trapping program attracts national attention

THE unprecedented Greater Sunraysia Pest Free Area (GSPFA) fruit fry trap roll-out has attracted national attention as it continues to grow, with Robinvale set for distribution this weekend.

The roll-out of Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF) trapping kits — considered the largest ever conducted in the country — has already covered the immediate Swan Hill area and extended to Koondrook/Barham last weekend.

The Robinvale-Euston Football Netball Club has decided to play its part by distributing the kits at the entrance gate to their home game in Euston this Saturday.

“Hopefully we can give a few out there and then we’ll start giving whatever we have left to people around town,” said Mick Garreffa, a member of the the club’s committee.

The mass trapping program will continue to expand, with plans to cover Wentworth and Mildura in the coming weeks.

Mr Garreffa, who is also a table grape grower, said the distribution was the first of its kind in Robinvale and local producers were fully behind the concept due to the impact QFF has had on their industries.

“Every year they seem to find some, but it costs the industry a lot of money — that’s the biggest problem,” he said.
